The Light in the Forest book synopsis

Johnny Butler was a four year old white boy when he was captured by the Lenni Lenape Indians to live with them for the rest of his life. After eleven years of living with the Lenni Lenape Indians word reaches his village that the Indians must surrender their white prisoners. True Son (Johnny Butler) is returned to his white family. He doesn't understand there culture and thinks their language, clothing, homes, and behavior don't make any sense. Of his father Harry, his invalid mother Myra, his younger brother Gordie, his Uncle Wilse, his Aunt Kate his only ally is Gordie. Uncle Wilse has deemed all indians as savages, and even antagonizes True son.

When True Son meets Bejance, a black slave who used to live with Indians and once could speak the Lenni Lenape language. True Son feels home sick and tries to speak Lenni Lenape with Bejance he finds that Bejance has forgotten so much of the language he can't even hold a conversation. But Bejance does tell true son about a very old indian who could speak the Lenni Lenape language called Corn Blade. Bejance tells True Son that Corn Blade lives on the third closest of the mountains around them. True son was very homesick so he started making plans to meet Corn Blade. His plans were foiled by his Uncle Wilse, which causes True Son to get very sick because of the change in his environment around him and missing the Indian way.

One day when Johnny was sick he was greeted in the night by Half Arrow. Half Arrow tells Johnny about how it was his Uncle Wilse that is responsible for the murder of Little Crane. After their revenge on Uncle Wilse by beating him and cutting off his hair they make there way back to their home, with the Lenni Lenape Indians. Once they get there True Son is warmly greeted by all of his Indian family. Little Crane's family want revenge on the people that killed him so they plot to raid a boat filled with white people. Johnny, thinking of his white brother when seeing the little boy in the window warns the people that the raid is coming. The white people get away unharmed.

True Son's father Cuyloga is very disappointed with True Son and decide that he has betrayed the Indians and makes Johnny leave the Indians forever.
